Sidney is now pursuing a life-long dream and taking a break from the more traditional role of owning and operating kennels and group classes. Sidney is now travelling Australia presenting seminars and workshops on his Straight-Line System.
My obsession with dogs started when I was 7 years old after my father allowed me to keep a German Shorthair Pointer puppy from a litter of pups we were looking after for family friends while they were away on holidays. I called her Bronela, my father helped me take her to weekly obedience classes, and we were inseparable from day one except when I was at school. When I was 10 I signed up Bronela for our first obedience trial. We didn’t go so well but we still had lots of fun and it was a great learning experience. Not long after the trial, Bronela started experiencing seizures and was diagnosed with leukemia. Tragically she died 18 months later and for a while my world fell apart. The bond I had with her was profound, and the pain I felt from her loss impacted me deeply. I knew at this very early point in my life, I wanted more than anything to be a dog trainer when I grew up.
In my early 20s I joined what was then called Australian Dog Training (ADT) as a client and a month after starting obedience classes I signed up to became a student dog trainer. I was fascinated about canine behaviour and training and spent as much time as I could with others absorbing as much information as I could. I signed up to every course and seminar on offer and spent countless hours researching and learning from trainers from all fields and backgrounds. This passion has carried on throughout my life and I’m continually learning from others from around Australia but also around the globe. I’m privileged to have been able to spend time with some of the best in the industry and am very grateful to all of the trainers who have shared their knowledge with me, which has helped me to become the trainer I am today.
My ongoing curiosity about how dogs think and learn has led to a strong desire to share my knowledge and teach others. I’m always seeking a better way—not only to teach dogs, but also to enable owners a clear pathway for having a better relationship with their dog.
