Understanding Dog Aggression: It’s All About Genetics & Environment

As a dog trainer, one of the biggest challenges is tailoring your approach to each unique dog. Every pup is different, shaped by their genetics and environment. But how does this help owners dealing with aggression or behavioral issues? Let’s break it down!

Assessing Confidence in Dogs

When I meet a dog, I assess their confidence by observing:

  • Do they greet me or avoid me?

  • Is their head/tail raised or lowered?

  • Are they showing signs of stress (raised hair, avoiding eye contact)?

  • Will they take treats or let me touch them?

  • How quickly do they warm up to new situations?

  • Are they eager to play fetch or tug?

A confident dog adapts quickly to new environments, while a nervous dog may need more time. By starting training without pressure and letting the dog have fun with their owner, I build trust naturally. Over time, most dogs warm up and engage!

Why Training Matters

Training is key! It equips owners with handling skills and teaches dogs to focus on their humans, reducing unwanted behaviors like aggression.
