Dog Daycare: What You Need to Know

As a dog trainer, I get asked about dog daycare a lot. It’s a hot topic, and while it’s tempting to dive into every detail, let’s focus on the big picture. Many owners choose daycare to socialize their dogs, but here’s why that decision deserves a closer look.

The Problem with Human Logic

It’s natural to think of our dogs like kids, but dogs aren’t humans. This mindset—called anthropomorphism—can lead to misunderstandings about what dogs truly need.

For example, I once met someone upset about seeing calm dogs in crates at a seminar. Their reasoning? “I wouldn’t treat my kids like that.”

But dogs thrive on structure, not human parenting styles. Comparing the two often clouds our judgment.

What’s Really Happening at Dog Daycare?

Daycares can seem like a fun, safe place for your dog to play, but here’s the reality:

  • Lack of Training: Most facilities focus on managing groups, not training. This can amplify excitability, especially around other dogs, which may lead to behavioral issues.

  • High Staff-to-Dog Ratios: I’ve seen ratios as high as 20–30 dogs per staff member. In my professional opinion, 5–8 dogs per staff is ideal for proper supervision.

  • Not to mention groups of dogs that are so large if a fight did break out it would be impossible to do anything about it. I’ve seen this at numerous day care centres.

  • Safety Concerns: Without proper oversight, incidents like fights or even injuries can happen. Some dogs have tragically been harmed at daycares.

  • Young, Distracted Staff: Many facilities rely on young staff who may be more focused on their phones than on your dog’s well-being.

Socialization Done Right

Socialization isn’t just about throwing dogs together in a room. It’s about structured, positive interactions that build confidence and good behavior.

Overstimulation at daycare can lead to over-excitability, which might show up as reactivity around other dogs.

What Can You Do?

✅ Research facilities thoroughly: Ask about staff training, dog-to-staff ratios, and safety protocols.
✅ Consider alternatives like structured training classes or one-on-one playdates for better socialization.
✅ Work with a professional trainer to ensure your dog’s behavior stays balanced.
